About Professional Bull Riding and the PBR Built Tough World Finals

Professional Bull Riding is a rough and grueling sport with roots imbedded in American culture. It is America's original extreme grueling sport. The PBR is a captivating and adrenaline charged sport that features an amazing cast of the greatest bull riders and bucking bulls found anywhere in the world.

The Professional Bull Riders, Inc. is based in Pueblo, Colorado. It was created in 1992 when a group of 20 bull riders decided to break away from the traditional rodeo scene. They were seeking to increase the popularity and attention given specifically to the sport of professional bull riding. They felt that because bull riding was the most popular event at a rodeo, it deserved to be truly featured and could easily stand on its own. Each of these bull riders invested a hard-earned $1000 of their own money, a few of them borrowing from family and friends, in order to start the PBR.

In early 2007, Spire Capital Partners completed a deal with the PBR Board of Directors to acquire the interests of many of the founding riders who had retired. This was done to invest in the growth of the organization. Those first 20 bull riders had turned their $1000 personal investment into millions of dollars. The PBR is owned today by Spire Capital, 44 cowboys, and management. This last year was the most successful year of the PBR's existence. The PBR established milestones in revenue of the organization, bull rider earnings, record breaking performances, and attention by the media. The PBR still enjoys the title of being the fastest growing sport in the country, and it does so while being one of the only professional sports that are actually owned by its athletes.

More than 800 bull riders from the U.S., Mexico, Canada, Australia, and Brazil hold memberships in the PBR. They compete in more than 300 bull riding events per year on either the elite tour, which is known as the Built Ford Tough Series presented by Wrangler, the three minor league tours, the Copenhagen Bull Riding Challenge Tour, the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Tour, and the Discovery Tour, or the PBR International circuits, known as PBR Australia, PBR Brazil, PBR Canada, and PBR Mexico. The ultimate goal each year for the PBR athletes is to qualify for the prestigious BPR World Finals in Las Vegas, where the coveted title of PBR World Champion is decided. The city of Las Vegas has brought so much attention to the sport that in after just 14 sessions, the annual prize money shot up to more than $10 million dollars.

Because of the great success of the PBR and the increasing interest in sponsorships, major TV networks continue to support and show the PBR. Last year, eight Built Ford Tough Series broadcasts were aired on NVC and Fox Sports; and all 30 events aired on VERSUS. Broacasts in foreign countries reached over 80 countries and more than 500 million households. Over 100 million people tune in each year to the PBR on network and cable television in the U.S., and ratings are rising steadily.

The growing popularity of the PBR's raw sport and excellent entertainment has propelled the PBR to very strong growth in live attendance as well. In 1995, about 300,000 fans went to PBR events across the United States. Today, the PBR attracts over 1.5 million live event attendees each year. During last year's PBR World Finals in Las Vegas, about 90,000 fans attended the live shows over the seven-day period. Millions more watched at home in the U.S. and all over the world. There is even an official PBR magazine, the bi-monthly "Pro Bull Rider."

The PBR World Finals consists of seven days (eight rounds) of competition. You will see 45 of the top Professional Bull Riders matched randomly against the toughest bulls in the sport. The top 15 riders who have the highest total score after the first seven rounds then qualify for the final round of competition, which is conducted during the second half of the final Sunday's performance. The rider with the highest total score on five bulls determines the PBR World Finals winner - giving the rider a bonus of more than $225,000.
