About Professional Bull Riding and the PBR Built Tough World Finals

Professional Bull Riding is a fierce, rough, and grueling sport with roots deeply imbedded in American culture. It is America's original extreme sport. The PBR has become a captivating and adrenaline charged sporting event that features an incredible cast of the greatest bull riders and bucking bulls in the world.

The Professional Bull Riders, Inc. is headquartered in Pueblo, Colorado. It was created in 1992 when a group of 20 bull riders broke away from the traditional rodeo scene seeking to increase the popularity and attention given to the sport of professional bull riding. They felt that because bull riding was the most popular event at a rodeo, it deserved to be in the limelight and could easily stand alone. Each of these bull riders invested a hard-earned $1000, a few of them borrowing from family and friends, to start the PBR.

In early 2007, Spire Capital Partners finalized a deal with the PBR Board of Directors to acquire the interests of many of the retired founding riders. This was done with the intent of investing in the growth of the organization. Those first 20 bull riders had turned their $1000 investment into millions. The PBR is owned today by 44 cowboys, management, and Spire Capital. Last year was the most successful year of the PBR's existence. It established milestones in organizational revenue, bull rider earnings, record breaking performances, and media attention. The PBR still relishes the title of being the fastest growing sport in the country, and it does so while being one of the only professional sports that are owned by its athletes.

More than 800 bull riders from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia, and Brazil hold PBR memberships. They compete in more than 300 bull riding events per year on either the elite tour, known as the Built Ford Tough Series presented by Wrangler, the three minor league tours, which are the Copenhagen Bull Riding Challenge Tour, the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Tour, and the Discovery Tour, or the PBR International circuits, known as PBR Australia, PBR Brazil, PBR Canada, and PBR Mexico. The ultimate goal each year for the PBR athletes is to qualify for the prestigious BPR World Finals in Las Vegas, where the coveted title of PBR World Champion is decided. The city of Las Vegas has brought so much attention to the sport that in after just 14 sessions, the annual prize money shot up to more than $10 million dollars.

Due to the success of the PBR and the increasing sponsorship interests, major TV networks continue to support the PBR. Last year, eight Built Ford Tough Series broadcasts were aired on NVC and Fox Sports; and all 30 events aired on the VERSUS. Foreign broadcasts reached over 80 countries and more than 500 million households. Over 100 million viewers tune in each year to the PBR on cable and network television in the U.S., and ratings are steadily rising.

The increasing popularity of the PBR's raw sport and quality entertainment has propelled the PBR to strong growth in live attendance as well. In 1995, about 300,000 fans attended PBR events across the United States. Today, the PBR attracts over 1.5 million live event attendees each year. During last year's PBR World Finals in Las Vegas, about 90,000 fans attended the live shows over the seven-day period. Millions more tuned in at home in the U.S. and around the world. There is even an official PBR magazine, the bi-monthly "Pro Bull Rider."

The PBR World Finals consists of seven days (eight rounds) of competition. You'll see 45 of the top Professional Bull Riders randomly matched against the sport's toughest bulls. The top 15 riders who have the highest total score after the first seven rounds qualify for the final round of competition, which is conducted during the second half of the final Sunday's performance. The rider with the highest total score on five bulls determines the PBR World Finals winner - garnering the rider a bonus of more than $225,000.
